SALLY LAPE

Internship Field: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Design

Major/Minor: Architectural Design, Art Practice

Host: Duane Phillips Architektur und Städtebau

Location: Berlin

Duration: 3 months in summer of 2015

Description: "I contributed to two major projects. The first was a renovation of the attic level of a pre-war building in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. My task was to create floor plan designs for the renovation: remodeling the roof into three new apartments, while maintaining the original wooden roof structure. I participated in client meetings and worked with my boss to create multiple design iterations. I also created 3D models in Google SketchUp (a 3D modeling software) to help the clients visualize the potential changes.

The company splits its time between architectural projects and urban planning - my boss runs the Europe office for DPZ, an international planning firm. I contributed to a competition entry for the re-design of the city center of Poznan, Poland. I assisted with edits and graphic considerations in the proposed plan, and was able to learn quite a bit about the process of a typical city planning project."

Comments: "I had the opportunity to both improve my existing architectural skills and learn a significant amount about urban planning, which I did not completely expect, but was pleasantly surprised by. My experience overall reinforced my interest in architecture, but also widened my scope of interest to include the field of urban design. In the future I would definitely consider participating in architectural projects with more of an urban planning focus."
